DEMI LOVATO TALKS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS AND RECOVERY

Demi Lovato is one of a number of pop stars who has come forward about her struggles with addiction and mental illness. Now that Lovato is in recovery, she is also the subject of a new documentary where she candidly discusses her life and 

Lovato told Rolling Stone that now that she’s applying recovery to her every day life, “It’s not so much about avoiding drugs and alcohol, because I don’t necessarily put myself in those situations. I don’t go to clubs. It shapes my life in a sense that I do inventories all the time.”

Lovato is also bipolar, and she said, “I’m proud to be bipolar and speak about it. Bipolar is a mood disorder. I deal with mood swings, I deal with episodes of mania, and bipolar-depression phases as well. But I’ve used my voice to help others, and I feel proud that I’ve been able to do that.”

Lovato told The Fix, “I went through some tough times an went to treatment for some struggles that I had and now I’ve come out the other side, and I use my stories to help others and inspire them to get the help they need…I make sure I stay on my medications. I go to AA meetings…Every day is a battle. You just have to take it one day at a time. Some days are easier than others and some days you forget about drinking and using, but for me, I work on my physical health, which is important, but my mental health as well.”

Demi Lovato is also reportedly five years sober, and she told The Fix, “Surrendering is the most important thing whenever you’re trying to battle your demons.”
