GOOD MENTAL HEALTH DEFINED

Mental health. We think we know and understand what it means especially good mental health. In this case, it’s not so much you know it when you see it -although mental health problems can be visually apparent – but it’s also a case of you know it when you feel it.

Good mental health doesn’t always mean feeling happy, but it also indicates how we deal with bad things in life. While each person’s mental health can be personally defined, there are some excellent ways to measure your mental health, and a good place to start is with the definition of mental health itself.

Defining Mental Health

According to Mentalhealth.gov, “Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.”

As Medical News Today also explains, “Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well being – it is all about how we think, feel, and behave. The term mental health is sometimes used to mean an absence of a mental disorder.” In other words, you don’t have mental problems or issues that can potentially cloud your life.

Once you know the true definition of mental health, you also learn what can cause mental health issues. As this site continues, the following factors can create mental health problems, and they include “biological factors,” like your brain chemistry, experiencing trauma or abuse, and of course, your family history has a lot to do with your mental health. If your parents have mental health issues, you can develop them or inherit them as well.

How a Definition Gives You More to Strive For

When you try to look up the best definition of mental health on the net, the various definitions give you more things to put on your mental wellness checklist. Maybe you grew up with a vague idea of what mental health is, but the more you learn about how it’s defined, the more you can work on improving your own happiness.

As Medical News Today reports, the World Health Organization calls mental health “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

In other words, the better you feel inside, the more you can contribute to the outside world, and enrich your personal world.

Ultimately everyone has to decide for themselves their own personal definition of good mental health. You know it when you feel it, and others will notice how happy and well you are as well.

How do you define your personal mental health? Do you know it when you feel it? Can others see and feel it in you too? Hopefully, these definitions will help you understand the value of good mental health so you can live long and happy with good peace of mind.
