A KENNEDY IN RECOVERY WANTS TO BREAK THE SILENCE AND END THE STIGMA OF ADDICTION

Christopher Kennedy Lawford is the son of the late Rat Packer Peter Lawford and Patricia Kennedy. He comes from a long line of addiction, but he’s been sober since 1986, and is very active in the recovery community.

Lawford, who struggled with addiction for many years, told Irish Central, “This is an illness that many people don’t believe you can do anything about. But I am here to tell them that life can change.”

Speaking out is paramount for Lawford: “Addiction is the most media-covered illness in America. Yet the silence of recovery from addiction is deafening.” While you can always choose to be anonymous, Lawford has been a visible example of recovery because, as he says, “The only way addiction will get the attention and money it deserves is if people in recovery get active and get visible.”

While there’s still a stigma surrounding addiction, Lawford told Parade, “Addiction is a brain illness, and it’s not limited to one demographic or another. You can be an alcoholic in the White House or in the poor house…I tried for 10 years to get clean [but] I never gave up trying. That comes from my family. Finally sober, I now work saving lives.”
